Objective - Explicate a poem

Agenda - 1) discuss explication assignment; 2) analyze the three Dickinson poems

Homework - Read "Because I Could Not Stop of Death" and complete journal #18: In this entry, don't worry about what you think this poem might mean. Instead, write about what you notice about the imagery. What are things Dickinson describes in the poem? How does she characterize "Death?" What happens in the poem in terms of plot? Shoot for 200 words. Write in complete sentences.

Agenda - 1) Discuss meaning of sonnets 73 and 23; 2) Find evidence to support that meaning.

Homework: Complete journal #17:


Journal 17: Choose either “Sonnet 73” or “Sonnet 23” and write a journal entry explaining your interpretation of the poem.

Include a working thesis statement at the beginning, and support it with specific evidence from the poem.

Homework - Read "Sonnet 18" and write journal #16:


Journal #16: Read and reread “Sonnet 18.” Explain your interpretation of the poem.

Consider dealing with these questions:

  • Who is the speaker addressing in the poem?
  • What is the speaker saying to this person?
  • How do you know?
  • What comparison does the speaker make between “a summer’s day” and the person he addresses?
  • What do the last two lines mean?

A Note on this Week's Schedule

Hello AP students -

We're on a pretty random schedule this week because of testing and homecoming, so I may not be posting daily agendas as they are being constantly changed. Be sure, though, that you bring a rough draft outline of your conference to class on Thursday. You should also have completed your definitions for the Perrine essay. Be ready to discuss this article on Friday and next Tuesday.

Homework - FOR WEDNESDAY: Read "The Nature of Proof..." essay, writing the main idea of each of the first 15 paragraphs in the margin. Complete journal #11. FOR THURSDAY: Create a rough draft outline for your conference.


JOURNAL #11 Read Perrine’s “The Nature of Proof in the Interpretation of Poetry” and define the following words.

·     ECONOMICAL, CONSENSUS, AMBIGUITIES, CONNOTATIONS, VIABLE

Homework - 1) Write journal #9 (I will collect this tomorrow); 2) study for Friday vocab quiz; 3) finish personal statement revision for Monday.

JOURNAL #10: Reread (maybe a few times) paragraph #63 on page 556 (It begins: “There,” resumed the sable…”).

Analyze what the speaker says here. Who is he speaking to? What is the point he is making? What details from his speech seem significant?

“Notice and fondle the details” before you try to connect it to other parts of the story…
